I am truly thankful and honored by your generous award. This wonderful gift has given me the opportunity to pursue my academic dream without the stress of financial burdens. Economic hardship has been a constant in my life. My immigrant parents fled from war-torn Vietnam during the 1970′s by boat to refugee camps in Hong Kong. From there, our family immigrated to Canada through the generous sponsorship of the Canadian government. It was a difficult transition as my parents didn’t speak english and held only a grade-school education but they were able to secure low paying jobs. With the help of social assistance and subsidized housing, my parents were able to support six young children. Growing up in a low-income area made me really appreciate community programs such as “The Breakfast Club” where a nutritious breakfast is provided for 25 cents. It also made me realize the gap in healthy living and poor neighborhoods which motivated me to look into a career within the healthcare industry. This scholarship has really changed my life and I am humbled by your generosity. It means a lot to me that someone who I have never met before cares enough to believe in me and to support me.
